Garden 02:38
The flowers in my garden aren't blooming without you, The birds packed their cases and hurried away. The skeleton leaves sunk like silt through a puddle, And settled like dust in the grass. I believe that someday we will walk again in fields of clover. Will I see you again in my garden? Will I see you again? Will I see you again in my garden? Will I see you again? (Instrumental solo) The flowers in my garden aren't blooming without you, The beetles are coming to chew up the leaves, The tendrils of posies lie bended and idle, Still waiting for springtime to come. All through winter buried in the frozen ground the bulbs were waiting.

Trees 04:49
Light, Filtering through, Patterns and weaves, Spilt on the ground. Oh, Face to the sun, Movement of leaves, Falling around. Reach over me, over me. Reach over me, over me. Oh, Here I can breathe, Here in the deep hush, Warm light surrounds us. Oh, Silent, silent and soft, Feathery branches, Reaching aloft. Hush, Make not a sound, Steadfast and sturdy, Standing your ground. Ooohs

Water 03:58
Would you take me down to the water's edge? I see clearly there. Would you sail away on a Summer's eve? Would you meet me there? Would you take me down to the water's edge? I see clearly there. Would you take me down, would you lead me down, To the water where, The bones of me find their release, Deep in the watery shadows, There's some kind of peace. Would you take me down? (x6) Would you take me down? (I wish you would take me) Would you take me down? (Why won't you take me down?) Would you take me down? (Would you take me down?) Would you take me down? Would you take me down to the water's edge? I see clearly there. Would you sail away on a Summer's eve? Would you meet me there? Would you take me down to the water's edge? I see clearly there. Would you sail away on a Summer's eve? Would you meet me there? Would you meet me there? Would you meet me, would you meet me there?

Buildings 03:10
Streetlights flickering, Faceless buildings illuminated, Air is thickening, As the darkness presses in. Pavements slick with rain and tiny squares of light, Containing multitudes of worlds that you might never enter. Heartbeat quickening, As the senses begin to falter, Windows splintering, As the darkness presses in. Oh the line is thin and tenuous at best, Only a breath away from ruin, you just catch a glimpse of. Stake your claim, Build a tiny little space, This place you have found, Don't look down. Stake your claim, Build a tiny little space, This thing you have found, Don't look down, don't look down, don't look down. Heartbeat quickening, As the senses begin to falter, Windows splintering, As the darkness presses in. Oh the line is thin and tenuous at best, Only a breath away from ruin, you just catch a glimpse of.

about

Spaces was inspired by the outdoor settings that kept us going during the various lockdowns that took place during the pandemic.

Each song on the EP has a video created by Manchester’s Rich Williams, that goes along with the track, however, audiences are encouraged to get outdoors and listen to the tracks in situ, by visiting places that make them think of the four song titles – Garden, Trees, Water and Buildings.

We hope that this will encourage listeners to slow down, consider the music as more of an event and that the different environments will seep into the music to make it a slightly different ‘live’ experience for each person.

This work was commissioned by Manchester Jazz Festival and premiered at their digital festival in January 2022.

about

Night Porter Manchester, UK

Melancholy duo made up of Nishla Smith and Emma Johnson.

The pair found writing together created a different voice to their individual work and wanted to explore it further.

This new project moves away from the live jazz band setting and employs layering, electronic and more pop-based songwriting to create music that is a blend of both musicians’ styles and influences.
